Parts Needed for 2017 Dodge Challenger to Tow Trailer

Question:

I sure wish someone could tell me why the factory does not recommend towing when I have way more than enough power and the tranny can be set to shift very firm with no slippage. Add to that a 8 speed automatic..I have asked many people yet know one knows. I have ruled out power so the only thing left is the frame of the car maybe can not take the stress of towing? This also is hard to believe as this is basically a race car with a 485 hp rating so I doubt it would have a weak frame. I just dont get this not recommended for towing when I have twice the power of any pick up on the road that are rated to tow a houseboat. Very frustrated!! I want to tow a small boat. But no answers on why I cant.

It's a combination of a few things, but the only people who will be able to give you the green light to tow with your car will be Dodge as they rated it, engineered it, and will be who would have to honor the warranty of the vehicle.

Clearly you have the drivetrain to tow with your Challenger, but the other things to consider is the cooling capacity of the engine and transmission, the brake power, the frame strength, suspension components etc.

That said we have a 2 inch hitch that fits your vehicle with the Draw Tite part # 76145 which I attached an install video for on your vehicle. Some people are going to tow with their vehicle regardless of what the dealer says is why we carry this.

Then for custom fit trailer wiring you'd want the Tekonsha part # 118656 and you'd have a very easy to install and reliable wiring setup.

Since you wanted to do some towing you might be interested in etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch ball, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag.

If the ball mount kit does not include a ball mount with the right rise or drop to tow the trailer level, check out the link I have included that explains how to measure to choose a ball mount to tow the trailer level.
