Towing Capacity of 2016 Jeep Wrangler with 3.6L V6 and W5A580 Automatic Transmission

Question:

I have a 2016 Jeep Wrangler that I’m looking to tow a small trailer with. It has a 3.6L V6 with a W5A580 automatic transmission with no overdrive. Will I be ok to tow with this transmission? I do plan on installing a transmission cooling kit but not sure if not having overdrive will make towing difficult. Thank you.

Your 2016 Jeep Wrangler's W5A580 transmission is a proven heavy-duty 5 speed automatic transmission made by Mercedes-Benz and you do not need to worry about towing a small trailer. Overdrive can actually cause excessive shifting, especially in hilly areas, so you'll be fine without it.

According to the online manual towing capacity for your Jeep with the 3.6L and this automatic transmission is either 2000-lbs maximum trailer weight (with the 3.21 rear axle) or 3500-lbs (with the 3.73 rear axle) but you'll want to check your printed manual and also your hitch's safety sticker to confirm its capacity too, which could differ from the vehicle.

A transmission cooler is a sensible addition for towing since you cannot over-cool transmission fluid. I suggest Class III cooler # D13502 from Derale which will pull a lot of the towing-generated heat from the transmission system. An install video is linked for you.

If you don't have a hitch I suggest part # e98856 as long as you have a standard rear bumper. For 4-pole wiring if you need it you can use # 118416. If the trailer has electric brakes you'll need a controller like the Primus IQ # TK90160 which you'll install using our complete kit # ETBC7.
