2016 BMW X5 XDrive40e Trailer Hitch Recommendation

Question:

Hello, Shopping for a 2016 X5 XDrive40e. I believe some come with a sort of M Performance Package. Hard to find how these vehicles were optioned that model year. I note that your trailers specify for w/ and w/o M performance. Not sure if it matters with the XDrive 40e. Can you confirm? Do you recommend one brand over the other? Ive installed 3 hitches in my past. Thanks!

The trailer hitch fits we offer for your 2016 BMW X5 without the M package would be what you'd want for your Xdrive40e model. For that I really like the Draw Tite you mentioned part # 75600. This is a mostly hidden trailer hitch with great towing capacities.

If you'd prefer a totally hidden hitch when not in use the EcoHitch part # 306-X7265 is the way to go. When not in use you simply take out the attachment for the hitch opening and it's totally out of sight.

I’m going to order https://www.etrailer.com/Trailer-Hitch/Draw-Tite/75600.html For my 2016 BMW X5 eDrive and I wanted to know if you can recommend a 7 PIN wiring harness? Is it #56190 and then add a 7 way? The goal is to pull a horse trailer and add a wireless brake controller.

@Carolyn For the easiest installation, I would go with the plug-and-play harness from Tekonsha # TK47FR to give you the 4-way harness and then add a 7-way with the # ETBC7 kit. While you will still have to run wires for the 7-way and a power wire for the 4-way harness, using the TK47FR will keep you from having to tap into your X5's factory wiring in order to capture the light signals. Unfortunately there is not a plug-and-play 7-way harness.

Hello, a year ago I was shopping for a 2016 BMW X5 40e Hybrid. I wonder if your recommendations have changed or if there any new products to consider. I would like to pull the trigger.

The only new product is the trailer hitch style from Stealth Hitches. You'd use part # SH79VR for just accessories (like a cargo rack or bike rack) or part # SH85VR if you plan on doing some towing as well. Stealth Hitches is a premium option so the price reflects that and it is a nice upgrade to the EcoHitch style of trailer hitch. What all of this really boils down to is what you want your X5 to look like. If you don't mind the receiver then go with the Draw-Tite, if you like the option to remove the receiver go with the EcoHitch, if you want something that comes with a lock and stainless steel hidden receiver then go with the Stealth Hitches.
