Recommended Curt Sliding Fifth Wheel Hitch for 2007 Dodge Ram Short Bed

Question:

I am new to pulling fifth wheel trailer. Am buying toy hauler. And really need advice. There simply are so many choices. Our truck is not 4x4. stock wheels and tires. No lift kit. Have towed 35 ft offshore racing boat via TT no problem. Trying to figure out what I need for the fifth wheel. I want a Curt Slider because of Short bed. Past that I am confused.

To tow a fifth wheel trailer with your 2007 Dodge Ram with a 6-1/2 foot bed you will need to install base rails in your truck bed in order to mount a Curt sliding hitch.

Base rails come with installation kits and there are two different options for an '07 Dodge Ram, depending on the model of your truck; I will list the kits and you can select the right one. Keep in mind these kits come with both the base rails and frame brackets so you do not need to purchase them separately.

- 2007 Dodge Ram 1500: Curt Fifth Wheel Installation Kit # C16303-200
- 2007 Dodge Ram 2500 OR 3500: Curt Fifth Wheel Installation Kit # C16301-200

Either of these kits will give you base rails to install a Curt sliding fifth wheel hitch. For that I strongly recommend the A-Series of Curt hitches because they are reliable and easy to use. You will only have to choose one with the capacity you need.

- Curt A16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ R16 Slider - 16,000 lbs # C16521
- Curt A20 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ R20 Slider - 20,000 lbs # C16541

Both of these hitches will enhance your fifth wheel towing experience because they give you a highly secure connection with your trailer's king pin. The reason for that is the A-Series has an interlocking dual jaw system that wraps totally around your trailer's king pin to minimize the amount of rattle that can occur with hitches that have a lesser jaw system.

These hitches also have a handy indicator system which lets you know if the jaws on the hitch are ready to couple, uncouple or tow. This color-coded system, which you can check out in the accompanying photo along with the jaws, makes the process of hooking up or disconnecting your trailer much simpler. The Curt A-Series has a fully articulating head which also eases the coupling process and built in zerk fittings so you can lube the hitch without issue.

Finally, you will need wiring into your '07 Ram's truck bed and for that I recommend the Hopkins 5th Wheel/Gooseneck 90-Degree Wiring Harness # HM42137 which works with the factory 7-way on your truck.

I have added links to video reviews of the rails, hitches and harness for you as well as a link to a help article on fifth wheel towing which I recommend checking out.
