Coach Steps Chattering While Retracted

Question:

My Coach Step started acting up. It goes OUT when I open the door with no problem like it is suppose to. But the when I close on the way IN and it completes the IN cycle it starts jumping 5-6 times then it settles then it stops and is IN. The jumping is like it tries to keep going IN. While the motor is disengaged the steps work fine by me pushing them in and out, there is no dragging or bent parts I removed the steps and close and open the door and it does the same thing when it goes IN. I removed the motor there is no broken teeth on the gear. While the motor is disengaged and I open and close the door the motor runs fine and very quietly. I am beginning to think the my problem is the LCI Step Control Module Part No: 164889 which you sale. I like to know what your opinion is before I order a $165.00 part that probably is not returnable if that is not my problem. Thank you for your help.

I spoke with my contact at Lippert about the issue you are having with your Coach Steps. They stated that this is likely a result of the motor not "amping out" rather than a faulty control module. When the step is fully retracted, the motor should send out a high amperage rating to the control module which it then recognizes as the step being fully retracted and cuts power. The motor is likely not reaching the "amping out" figure so the control module doesn't know when to cut power.

The correct replacement motor for you is the Replacement Motor for Lippert Electric Coach Step part # LC301695. I am fairly certain this is the issue you are having but it can be returned if for some reason it is not.
