Troubleshooting Stromberg Carlson Electric RV Steps That Wont Extend or Retract
Question:
Hi, I am having a problem with my steps. first they came out while going down the road so I took the one bolt off and manualy raised them.. when we got to our next camping spot I noticed they were working again so I re-installed the bolt and turned the step switch off to make sure they were working properly and they did .. now a couple months later someone stopped us and said they were out again so I rigged them up manualy and now I cannot get them to work .. I have checked the ground, used a magnet to activate the switch the steps make a clicking noise when I do this so I know they are getting power the light down below goes on and off when I activate the magnet switch... can you help me..?

Since the motor in your powered RV steps appears to be getting power (the light is coming on) it sounds like there may now be a mechanical issue. It is possible that there could be damage resulting from the steps being extended (without your knowledge) while you drove. That condition would put extra stress on the entire structure and might have caused an alignment issue. So in other words the first problem with the steps extending on their own might have caused a second issue with mechanical alignment.
I suggest that if you can you remove the motor to test it without the load of the steps on it. We offer replacement motor part # LC301695. If the motor operates correctly then there may be a mechanical issue preventing it from operating the steps. While the motor is removed you can also try manually extending and retracting the steps. If both the steps and motor work independently then the problem may be in the control box. We do offer a replacement box # SP-164889.
