Recommended Tire and Wheels for 2002 520dvx Ranger Single Axle Boat Trailer
Question:
I have a Ranger 520 DVX with 4500lb axle. in all of the research I did the boat, outboard, full fuel tanks, gear and trailer are around 3200-3500lb. hubs are 6x5.5 lug pattern and 4.25 center bore Diameter 0 offset. are wheels the same as tires. 2 wheels on an axle double the total capacity? for instance a 2800lb capacity single wheel..if put on the axle with another the total capacity of the wheels would be 5600lb? obviously the axle is only 4500 lb and you must not exceed your lowest load capacity so even though the wheels could handle 5600lb since it is a 4500lb axle the capcity of the assembly would be 4500lb correct? I was looking at the bobcat, lynx, or siberian wheels. would these wheels have the capacity for this trailer and how will they hold up being on a boat trailer with disk brakes and submerged in water? Also these axles as you can see have the cool hub system but I will be converting them to grease and a bearing buddy system. On those wheels would a center cap go over the bearing buddies or would you recommend leaving the center cap out of them? I am not sure if I can use the old lug nuts or need new but I am not totally sure of the tread on the stud either. I do know they are the older style ufp gold hub and rotor with oil bath. I just bought the boat and the guy said he just put new tires on it so i thought that was a plus. then found out they put goodyear marathon tires with a class c rating on the axles. st20575r15 c. For some reason they didnt get to the spare which had a 225/75r15 D tire on it. Had 2 extras that have never been mounted and they are the same as the axles. there seems to be between 3/4-1of clearance and since the original tires were 225/75r15 I dont believe I will have a clearance issue with that unless i hit a major bump that really compresses the leaf spring? although I havent had any problems yet they really are only a season old what worries me is I am taking a trip from illinois to texas next month. would you recommend a D or E rating on the tires for this with the information I gave you. I just want to make sure That I get the right parts the first time so that I do not have to send them back.

You are correct in your understanding. Some people interchange the word wheel with rim, but they are the same thing and then of course you have tires. Wheels are usually rated for weights as are tires, so combinations that are made on our site will have the lesser capacity of the two for the max capacity.
As you stated, each wheel and tire is rated based on just that single side, so you will double that for your axle. You are correct if that surpasses your axle capacity, you will be restricted by the max capacity of the lesser of the two.
For your wheels and tires, I recommend the following options that have the same Westlake tires (load range E) and the options for the wheels:
ST225/75R15 Radial Tire w 15" Liger Wheel - 6 on 5-1/2 - LR E - Black # LH36FR
ST225/75R15 Radial Tire w 15" Liger Wheel - 6 on 5-1/2 - LR E - Gray # LH96FR
These combinations are rated for 2,830 lbs at 80 psi and speeds up to 75 mph. They come with a 5 year warranty on the tire, 1 year warranty on the wheel, and 2 years of complimentary roadside assistance. They come ready to install. They will work with a center cap like # LHCS108-SI60C that will fit over bearing buddy grease caps without any issues.
You can use the same lug nuts as you currently have or you can use lug nuts like # LHLR103 and lock set # RG01-150 if desired for more security. I recommend using the same spare and rotating your tires regularly for best lifespan but your current spare can be used in a pinch for a short time.
Let me know if you have further questions.
