What Does the PL Error Code Mean on a Tekonsha P2 Trailer Brake Controller, 2004 Dodge Ram

Question:

The Prodigy brake controller installed in my 2004 Dodge diesel truck was showing a P.L. code when the brakes were applied. The trailer brakes were not activating. Where do I start, to find the problem.

The PL code on the Tekonsha P2, # 90885, indicates that there is a power loss while you are stepping on the brakes. The first thing I would check is the red wire. Using a circuit tester like # PTW2993, test the red wire when you step on the brake. It should show a signal when you step on the brake and no signal when you release the pedal.

If it does not show a signal, then the connection to the brake switch is no good and you will need to make a new connection. You can also check the stop light fuse to see if it is blown.

Next, check the blue wire, it should show power when you step on the brake and also when you us the manual override. If it does not show power when you step on the brake or sue the manual override, check the black wire connection and the white ground wire connection. The black wire should be connected to a circuit protected battery connection and the best ground for the controller is the negative battery terminal.

If everything is intact and connected properly you could have a problem with the internal circuitry of the brake controller and it will need to be replaced. If the power only goes off of the black wire when you step on the brake, this could indicate either an insufficient ground or an internal problem with the brake controller circuitry.
