If you are occasionally getting a "Trailer Disconnected" message on the dash of your truck the first place to look is the 7-Way connector on both the truck and trailer. You will want to inspect the connectors for any debris or corrosion that might be built up inside the pins, cleaning out as needed. Anything that would prevent a solid connection between the pins can trigger this alert on your dash.
Next I recommend inspecting the brake output wire on the trailer, which is usually blue, from the brake assemblies themselves up to the 7-Way. Check for any exposed or pinched areas that need to be replaced. Also check the wire coming from the 5 o'clock position on the truck side 7-Way as far as you can for any signs of damage.
If the wiring is good then a weak ground connection could be the culprit. Make sure the main ground at the tongue and the ground wires for each brake assembly on the trailer are securely attached to a clean, bare metal surface free of rust or paint.
Just let me know if the warning light continues to come on and we can keep troubleshooting. I have also attached a wiring article that you might find helpful.
