Tekonsha P3 Brake controller
Question:
I have a 2012 Dodge Ram truck will I need an adapter to plug this controller into the existing wiring in my truck. I see two multi- wire plugs near the park brake location where the factory unit is usually installed, or will these wiring plugs attach to the controller directly.

If your 2012 Ram was equipped with the factory 7-way trailer connector at the rear bumper, all you will need to install the brake controller is the wiring adapter, part # 3021-P.
One end of the adapter would plug into the rear of the controller, the other end would plug in to the connector under the dash. The connector will be located under the dash, between the brake and emergency brake pedal as shown in the instructions I have linked to.
If your Ram only has the 4 pole trailer connector, you will need the 4-pole to 7-way adapter, part # 37185. The adapter would plug into the existing 4-pole, with four wires remaining. The blue wire would carry the output voltage from the brake controller, and would need to be extended under the vehicle, up through the engine compartment, and through the firewall to the blue wire exiting the rear of the controller. The black wire is used for 12-volt power for any trailer mounted accessories that might need it. The black wire would be ran to the positive battery terminal via a 40 amp circuit breaker like part # 9510. A length of our duplex brake cable, part # 10-2-1 could be used to carry both the brake output and 12-volt accessory power from the front of the vehicle to the trailer connector. The white wire would be grounded to the vehicle frame, and the purple wire which is usually used for the trailer reverse lights is typically tapped into the reverse lights on the tow vehicle if needed. If not needed, it can be taped up out of the way.
If the Ram does not have any trailer connector, the under dash connector for the brake controller will not be present. The controller would need to be hardwired using our Brake Controller Install Kit, part # ETBC7. The install kit contains everything necessary to install the controller with the exception of the brake controller and the 4-way trailer connector for the Ram. A 4-pole can be installed using part # 119175KIT.
