Although not designed for use with custom running boards, the TorkLift Talon Custom Frame-Mounted Camper Tie-Downs - Aluminum - Front # TLC2204A could be used as a rear support for custom running boards. The strength for a step will most likely be there, but they have not been tested for that application so would not be covered under warranty if they were to fail.

My recommendation is to use the Nerf Bars designed for your vehicle as some are made to go past your cab. I've attached the page to all your options to assist. You will simply select your cab style from the drop down to see all your bar options.
