Replacement Brake Magnet and Tire/Wheel Combo for a 1964 Shasta Compact Camper

Question:

I am updating a 1964 Shasta Compact Camper trailer with optional electric brakes. I would like assistance with a replacement axle or possibly parts to update the existing axle. The Shasta Compact weights 1115 lbs, with the length of 12 foot 6 inch including hitch and the width of 6 foot 6 inch. The hitch weigh is 130 lbs and the tire size is 6.50 X 13 inch Any assistance would be most appreciated. I am missing a magnet on one of the hubs, I already have new bearings/races and seals. What do you think the axle weight is? I may be looking for a wheels and tire combo as well as baby noons…Thank you

I am guessing that your axle weight rating is either 2,000 lbs or 3,500 lbs. You should be able to verify this by looking at the tag/sticker near the trailer tongue or by finding the weight rating stamped in the middle of the axle. We do have replacement brake magnets for each. Simply check to see if you have 7" brake assemblies or 10" assemblies and then use part # AKBRKR-M7 or # AKBRKR-M10 respectively. Since the wheel in your picture has a 4 on 4" bolt pattern I am guessing that you have 7" brake assemblies.

We don't have any 6.50x13 size tires but we do have similar sizes. All of our tire/wheel combos that have a 4 on 4" bolt pattern use bias tires. Although the bias tires are a good option, we always recommend using radial tires for highway use as they have cords that run 90 degrees to the direction of travel which allows it to flex more and stay cooler than a bias tire.

I did some checking and it looks like all of our wheels that are compatible with Baby Moon Hubcaps have a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern. If you are really wanting the Baby Moon Hubcaps you will need to swap out your brakes and hubs for 5 on 4-1/2" bolt patterns.

If you would rather not go this route then I recommend using the Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10210 along with one of our upgraded 13" wheel like the HWT Series S5 # AM22322HWTB, HWT Split Spoke # AM22322HWT, or the Dexstar # AM20242.

Let me know if you have any other parts that you would need for restoring your Shasta camper and I can see what we have to help you!
