People run maintenance charges through the 7-ways of the vehicle and trailer all the time exactly like how you described. A 10 gauge wire basically like part # 10-1-1 run from the battery of the vehicle to the battery of the trailer will give you a maintenance charge as you are towing. This is the easiest and most effective way to do this and you don't need a charger anywhere on the line. This charge will only be whatever your alternator is putting out that isn't being used by your vehicle so it is basically just a maintenance charge.
