Comparing Folding Cargo Carrier to Fixed Shank Carrier for Noise and Movement

Question:

Im trying to decide between a Pro Series 63153 and the folding etrailer 98874. Im concerned that a folding shank like on the e98874 would have play at the pivot point where the shank folds. While overall rattle at the receiver can be reduced via a j-pin or anti-rattle hitch clamp, is there anything that can and needs to be done to eliminate play at the pivot point either when folded up or down? Or can the bolt around which it pivots be tightened enough?

You are correct that the 24x60 Reese Cargo Carrier for 2" Hitches - Steel - 500 lbs # 63153 will have less play because it doesn't have that pivot. You can even add an anti-rattle hitch lock like # 63232 to further eliminate movement.

The folding feature of the 24x60 etrailer Cargo Carrier for 2" Hitches - Steel - 500 lbs # e98874 is really nice for storage and clearance when not in use. The pivot will allow some play but not as much as you may imagine. You can tighten the bolt to help but you will still have the pin and clip as well. You can use the same hitch lock and anti-rattle, but you will be limited slightly to the folding feature movement because of the hitch pin # PC3. You can change that pin for a bolt if desired to give you more tightening but that reduces the functionality by requiring tools.
