Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver for 2016 Honda Odyssey Pulling Small Enclosed Trailer
Question:
Do I need a brake controller to pull a 4x6 enclosed cargo trailer? With the trailer and cargo will be less then 900 lbs.. We have a Honda Odessy 2016 SE.. Would you recommend a class11 or class111 hitch.. We will travel the USA for at least 3 month at a time.. We are considering cargo basket also.. Thank you for your time.

For your 2016 Honda Odyssey I recommended the etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver # e98862 for using either a cargo basket or for pulling an enclosed trailer. This is a Class III 2" receiver. The receiver is capable of 350lbs of tongue weight and 3,500lbs towing. With a weight distribution hitch the receiver is capable 500lbs of tongue weight and 5,000lbs towing. Be sure not to exceed the manufactures rating for towing on your Odyssey.
You should not need a brake controller if your trailer and cargo are only 900lbs. You will want to verify the local state laws where you plan on operating your trailer for their exact laws regarding trailer weights. Some states have a maximum weight without brakes, which is mostly 3,000lbs but some are as low as 1,500lbs currently. Other states require that your vehicle and trailer meet their minimum required stopping distances.
The Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness # HM11143114 will give you a 4-way flat trailer connection that is a simple plug n play type system. This will control the taillights on the enclosed trailer and also allow for Auxiliary Lights # C53201 if the cargo basket blocks your tail lights on the Odyssey.
The 60x24 etrailer Cargo Carrier # e98874 will allow you to carry 302lbs of cargo on your Odyssey.
