Does a Stronger Trailer Hitch Increase Towing Capacity

Question:

If my Gross combined Weight rating is only 23,000 lbs, and my truck weighs over 10,000 lbs, how is it this tow hitch increases to 20k? Does this change the GCWR?

Expert Reply:

The towing capacity of your vehicle can and will be likely different than the towing capacity of a trailer hitch. The lowest rated component between the vehicle and trailer hitch will be your limiting factor. The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C15810 does indeed have a 20,000 lb towing capacity when used with a weight distribution system but the vehicle is likely lower and will be your limiting factor. In order to find the tow capacity of your vehicle you will need to subtract the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) from the gross combined weight rating (GCWR) both of which can be found on the drivers side door jamb tag.
