When you set up a set of guide ons like the part # CE27660 you wouldn't want them to contact both sides of the boat at the same time. You would want an inch or two of clearance between the boat and the uprights.

The support posts on CE Smith Bunk-Style Guide-Ons #CE27660 is not meant to flex or pivot so they would pinch the boat. You would want to install them so that they match the width of the boat at the widest point if at all possible.
