Trailer Brakes Lock Up when Connected to Tow Vehicle that Does Not have a Brake Controller
Question:
My vehicle doesn’t have a brake controller, however when I connect the seven pin power connector from the trailer to the vehicle the brakes lock up. Is there something I can do to over ride this so my brakes don’t lock up?

Does your trailer use a 6-Way connector by any chance? And are you also using a 7- to 6-Way adapter? If so then the issue is that the trailer has the brake output on one pin and the corresponding pin on the adapter is the 12 volt circuit. The fix is easy. In either the adapter or the trailer side connector you would just switch the positions of the 12 volt circuit and the brake output circuit. Take a look at the picture I have included that shows how a 6-Way is pinned.
If both the trailer and the tow vehicle have 6-Way connectors or 7-Way connectors then it is probably the same situation. I have included a second picture showing how 7-Ways are wired.
There could also be a short between the 12 volt circuit and the brake output circuit. Make sure the vehicle and trailer side connectors are clean and free of corrosion inside, where the wires attach, and outside on the pins.
