Recommended Carrier for Mobillity Scooter with Class I Trailer Hitch

Question:

Do you have any mobility scooter carriers that can carry a 70# mobility scooter for a Class I hitch, Kia Soul, 24915 Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver? Can I get a 1.25inch to 2inch adapter to use with the hitch, or is the maximum supported tongue weight just not enough? I realize the adapter cuts the tongue weight in half.

We do have a couple cargo carriers available that are compatible with Class I hitches that might work well to transport your mobility scooter, such as the Reese # 63155. This is a really nice carrier that features inside/usable dimensions of 47 inches long and 20 inches wide. You can compare these dimensions to your scooter to see if it will fit. This is the largest Class I cargo carrier that we have available.

I have attached a short video demonstration on this product that you can also check out.

The larger carriers we have available are designed for 2 inch receivers. As you mentioned in your question, using a hitch adapter like the Brophy # HTAD will convert your 1-1/4 inch receiver to a 2 inch opening, but it will reduce the tongue weight capacity on the hitch by 50 percent.

The Draw-Tite Class I Hitch # 24915 that you have on your Kia Soul has a tongue weight capacity of 200 pounds, which would be reduced to 100 pounds when using an adapter. The combined weight of both your mobility scooter and carrier would need to stay below this reduced limit. This means the carrier itself will need to weigh 30 pounds or less after factoring in the 70 pound scooter. Even the Class I Surco Carrier mentioned above weighs 40 pounds, which would put you over this limit.

If possible, your best option will be to stick with a Class I cargo carrier so that the hitch can maintain its capacity.
