Troubleshooting Brake Controller Malfunction When Trailer Plug Gets Wet
Question:
Hi my Hyman Reese controller shows brakes activating when I brake with no trailer connected . 00 showing basically shorting out , turning on off with the self resetting circuit braker ,this only happens in the rain. The tralier plug is wet ofcourse. My question is ,is this common ? And Should the plug stay dry, if so there a way to keep the plug dry I guess the self resetting braker will burn out if not already as it was not flicking on off recently.

In order to protect your circuit breaker and your controller, you do need to keep moisture out of the electrical connections causing shorts. My recommendation is to use dielectric grease # 11755 to keep moisture and debris out of your connections. Use this at any connection point to give you a more secured connection. If you don't already have a cover for your trailer connection on your trailer, I recommend replacing your connector with one that has a spring loaded cover to keep a tight seal when not in use.
