Parts Needed to Flat Tow 2015 GMC Sierra 2500

Question:

Hi, I have a 2015 GMC Sierra 2500HD Denali. Can this vehicle be flat towed? Also, what equipment will I need to mount this truck? It will be towed behind a 2018 Newmar ESSEX. Do I really need the suplimental braking system and light kit or could I do without that? Thanks in advance

Yes, your 2015 GMC Sierra 2500 can be flat towed, and you MUST have a light kit and a supplemental braking system is also required by law in most states so you can check with your local authorities to find out if it is required where you are going to be flat towing.

There are a number of parts you're going to need in order to do this, starting with compatible base plates. I recommend the Roadmaster MS Base Plate Kit # RM-3180-2 so long as the truck is a 4 wheel drive, which I assume it is. For a tow bar I recommend going with the Roadmaster Falcon 2 Tow Bar # RM-520 because of how easy the tow bar is to connect to the base plates as well as its long arms, which make it easier to maneuver when towing; you will also need safety chains # RM-643.

For wiring kit that will allow your Sierra's lights to function while being towed you can use the Roadmaster Universal Hy-Power Diode Wiring Kit # RM-154. Please note you need to disconnect your battery and you need to research GM Technical Service Bulletin 13-00-89-007 for info on disconnecting the battery; Quick Battery Disconnect # RM-766 is recommended unless your truck is a diesel or has dual batteries.

As I mentioned, a supplemental braking system is a requirement in most states and I highly recommend the Air Force One # SM99243. It's designed specifically for motorhomes with air brakes, like your Newmar Essex, so there isn't any false braking. False braking is caused by a lot of other braking systems that trigger the vehicle's brakes when the coach's brake lights are activated.

Finally, it is likely you will need a high-low adapter such as # RM-076 to keep your tow bar level with your tow vehicle. The adapter you need is going to depend on some measurements you'll need to take. I have added a link to a help article on high-low adapters which explains the measurements you'll need, as well as a link to our page with our selection of adapters.
