How to Select Correct Leaf Springs for 1959 Camper Trailer
Question:
Hello, I am trying to determine what springs to get for our 59 camper but I find myself unsure every time I go to order them. I imagine I dont want it too light a weight capacity but also dont want too heavy because I feel like that could effect how it pulls behind me. I think its a 3500 lb axle but not certain. It has six lug hubs. Eye to eye looks like it should be 30inch as this would put my shackles just slightly rearward. It appears to have 7 leaves right now but they are so shot its hard to tell. And theyre 1 3/4inch wide. I was looking at 30inch 6 leaf rated at 2480 lb each but Im afraid thatll be too stiff. The camper is only 12 feet with no bathroom or holding tank. Just a small 8 or 10 gallon fresh water tank. Any help or insight you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

I can help you to determine what you need to know to pick the correct leaf springs for your trailer but you are very much on the right track in terms of the information you'll need.
Start with the length from the center of one eye to the center of the other eye, which you said was 30 inches. Even keeping in mind that springs are going to stretch a bit over time, that is a quite a long measurement. The longest we have is the 4-leaf double-eye spring # SP-210275 which measures 27" from center of spring eye to center of spring eye and is for a 3,500 lb axle; they are 1-3/4" wide; which is the normal width for springs.
It is also very important to know your axle's capacity in order to get the right springs. If you get springs that are greater than your trailer's weight capacity, it will result in a very stiff ride, as you referenced. I've added a link to a help article for you to check out which details double-eye trailer suspension which you should find useful as well as a link to our selection of leaf springs. If you have any questions about specific parts please don't hesitate to ask.
