How to Install a 7-Way Trailer Connector on a 2017 Ford F-150

Question:

Im looking into purchasing a 2017 F150 that does not have a tow package or trailer plug. What would I need to order to add a 7 prong harness? Are they prewired like Chevy Silverados?

In order to install a 7-way trailer connector on your 2017 Ford F-150, you are first going to need to install a 4-way trailer connector and then a 4 to 7-way trailer connector. For this, I recommend using the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Wiring Harness part # HM11140735 and the Hopkins Adapter 4-Pole to 7-Pole and 4-Pole part # 37185. The 4-way harness will be a direct plug and play option whereas the 7-way will require you to make two wiring connections. The two connections needed for the 7-way will be a blue and orange or red wire which are located on the driver's side frame rail.

If you are looking to tow a trailer with brakes which is why I assume you are needing a 7-way trailer connector then you will also need a brake controller. For this, I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller part # 90195 with the Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers part # 22292. The P3 is one of our best selling brake controllers largely due to its integrated safeguards that will protect both the vehicle and wiring in the event of a short.

I have attached a video that shows where the brake controller plug is located on your F-150 for you.
