Does the valve have to be positioned vertically or can it be positioned at 45 degrees, horizontally or anywhere in between?

The Valterra EZ Valve Electric Waste Valve for RV Black Water Tank - 3" Diameter # E1003VP will have no problem with function anywhere between vertical and horizontal. You will only be restricted by the valve mounting flanges on your current system, but you have the option of replacing those to meet your needs. I've attached a video of this system to assist.

I'd go the easier route and use the Valterra kit part #E1003VP for the 3 inch kit since it will make the install much easier. Plastic welding in new fittings can be frustrating so I'd go the easier route!

You'd want to remove your old valve and use ABS solvent bond like part #A05-0303 to install the part #E1003VP but it basically just installs in place of the old one.
