Recommendation For Flat-Towing A 2018 Chevrolet Sonic

Question:

Is the setup for the 2018 chevy sonic the same as for a 2016-17 chevy sonic? Looking to flat tow a 2018 and want to make sure parts are available before I buy.

Yes. It is similar and particular parts for 2018 are available. To flat tow a 2018 Chevrolet Sonic, you will need base plates, a tow bar, safety cables, wiring, a braking system, and maybe a high-low hitch adapter.

For base plates, I recommend the Roadmaster EZ4 Base Plate Kit with Removable Arms, Item # RM-523192-4 for the sedan with 1.8L engine or Item # RM-523194-4 for the hatchback with 1.8L engine. If you get a sedan with a 1.4L turbo engine then I recommend the Blue Ox Base Plate Kit with Removable Arms, Item # BX1703.

For a tow bar, I recommend the Roadmaster Falcon All Terrain Tow Bar, Item # RM-522, for the sedan and hatchback Sonic with a 1.8L engine. It is very dependable and easy to hook up. For safety cables, I recommend Roadmaster Safety Cables, Item # RM-645. For the Sonic with a 1.4L turbo engine, I recommend the Blue Ox Alpha Tow Bar, Item # BX7380, which has safety cables included.

For brake and tail lights, I recommend the Roadmaster Bulb and Socket Kit, Item # RM-155. This kit is a completely independent system from your vehicle's lighting system that mounts inside your tail light lens housing. Fuses must be pulled while towing the Sonic. To make dealing with fuses as simple as flipping a switch, I recommend getting the fuse bypasses like Item # RM76511 and Item # RM76512.

Most states require a supplemental braking system in the vehicle being flat towed. I recommend the SMI Stay-IN-Play Proportional System, Item # SM99251. The SMI has a one time setup and works proportionally with your RV's brake lights. You will also need a Stop Light Switch, Item # RM-751457, for the braking system to work properly.

A high-low hitch adapter may also be needed to keep your vehicle fairly level while being flat towed. A "safe zone" of 3 inches above or 3 inches below level must be maintained while towing a vehicle. High-low adapters provide necessary rise or drop to get into the "safe zone". I have attached a link to our available selections.

I have included links to additional information and videos to help you with your project. Be sure to consult the vehicle owner's manual for recommendations and suggestions for flat towing your vehicle.
