Will the Curt Hitch Part # C14082 Work with the Spare Tire on a 1986 Chevrolet C/K Series Pickup
Question:
86 Chevy 1/2 ton short bed. The install instructions say to remove the spare tire and bolt but dont mention putting it back. Does the use of this hitch mean that you lose your spare tire?

I spoke to my contact at Curt about the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C14082 for your 1986 Chevrolet C/K Series Pickup and they informed me that as long as the spare tire is of the stock tire size then it will work with the hitch installed. If you are looking to tow a trailer you will also need a wiring harness and ball mount/hitch ball if you do not already have them.
For a wiring harness that will give you a 4-way trailer connector at the rear of your truck, I recommend using the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector part #HM41115 as this is a completely plug and play option that will not require you to cut or splice any wires.
In order to determine the correct ball mount you will need to measure from the ground to the bottom of the coupler on your trailer while level and subtract that distance from the ground to the top of the inside edge on the trailer hitch receivers tube opening. The difference between the two measurements will give you the correct amount of rise/drop you will need to look for in a ball mount. I have linked a selection of our 2" ball mounts for you.
I have also attached a photo of a similar truck with this hitch installed so that you can see it with the spare tire attached.
