Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 2015 GMC Terrain

Question:

I have a 2014 Thor ACE 29.2. It currently has a 4 way flat for towing and I would like to convert it to a 6 way round. I will also need to have my 2015 GMC Terrain set up to flat tow. I had my mind made up on a Blu Ox Alpha tow bar but has seen some good reviews on the Roadmaster Sterling. Maybe you could give me some recommendations on complete setup. Also looking at Patriot ll supplementable braking. I would appreciate any help.

In order to convert the 4-way trailer connector on your 2014 Thor ACE 29.2 to a 6-way trailer connector you would want to use the Mighty Cord Trailer Connector Adapter part # A10-6034VP. The adapter plugs into the 4-way you have on your RV and will require you to hardwire in 3 additional wires. The white wire is for the ground and will need to be attached to a clean bare metal surface. The black wire will then need to be ran to the battery with an in-line fuse holder such as part # SWC9539 placed 6" from the positive battery terminal. For a fuse you can use part # C58450-1. The last wire you will need to run is the blue brake output signal wire which will need to be connected to the brake controller for normal travel trailer towing applications but since you will be flat-towing with your RV, the brake output signal wire will not be used. You can secure the 6-way trailer connector to the back of your RV using part # RM-910030-5.

In order to successfully flat-tow your 2015 GMC Terrain you will need a base plate kit, towbar, supplemental braking system, wiring harness, safety cables, and possible high-low adapter. I will attach my recommendations for each of the following items for you below.

Base Plate Kit for Roadmaster Tow Bar: Roadmaster EZ Base Plate Kit part # 523163-1 (See Install Video)

Base Plate Kit for Blue-Ox Tow Bar: Blue Ox Base Plate Kit part # BX1689 (See Install Video)

Roadmaster Tow Bar: Roadmaster Sterling All Terrain Tow Bar part # RM-576 (See Review Video)

Blue-Ox Tow Bar: Blue Ox Alpha Tow Bar part # BX7380 (See Review Video)

In regards to the Blue-Ox Alpha Tow Bar vs the Roadmaster Sterling Tow Bar, I like the Alpha tow bar more for a few reasons. Aside from being much more cost effective, the Alpha tow bar has a 3-year warranty compared to the 1-year warranty with the Sterling tow bar and the Alpha tow bar uses a triple-lug connection whereas the Sterling tow bar only uses a dual-lug connection.

Tow Bar Wiring Harness: Roadmaster Diode 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit part # RM-15267 (See Similar Install Video)

Supplemental Braking System: Blue Ox Patriot Portable Braking System part # BLU37TR

High-Low Adapter: See Article/Selection

Accessory: 12 Volt Outlet Kit part # RM-9332 (See Similar Install Video)

Accessory: Roadmaster Battery Charge Line Kit for Towed Vehicles part # RM-156-25 (See Similar Install Video)

Accessory: Roadmaster Stop Light Switch Kit part # RM-751439 (See Similar Install Video)

Accessory: Blue Ox Fuse ByPass Switch for Towed Vehicles part # BX88272 (See Similar Install Video)

According to the owners manual for your 2015 GMC Terrain, the # 32 fuse located in the vehicle's instrument
panel fuse block must be pulled in order to eliminate battery drain. The above fuse bypass is not required but will make engaging and disengaging the fuse much easier.
