Recommended 5th Wheel Rails and Hitch for 2012 F-150 Using Sidewinder Pin Box
Question:
I have a 2012 ford f150 super crew 4x4 with the 5.5 short-bed box. I am wondering what would be the best hitch to install to pull my 2004 Jayco Feather Light fifth wheel. The trailer weighs 6180 empty with a 1195 pin weight on my truck. The most weight that I can haul including cargo is 1800 pounds, but can tow up to 17000 pounds. I know that the pullrite 3100 will slide more than enough to ensure that my trailer will not hit the back of my cab, but weighs 300 pounds or more including the mounting brackets. I would like to know if the 1600 sidewinder will work and not hit the back of my cab since it is lighter with a standard fifth wheel hitch. Center of axle to back of cab is like 27 1/2 inches and the fifth wheel is 98 inches wide with no curved corners. Thanks

For your 2012 Ford F-150 Super Crew 4x4 with 5.5 foot bed, I recommend you start with the Reese Quick-Install Custom Base Rails and Installation Kit for 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches # RP50081-58. These custom brackets and rails make installation of 5th wheel rails easy. I then recommend the Reese 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch - Dual Jaw - 16,000 lbs # RP30047 which weighs just 97 lbs.
A Sidewinder pin box will work very well to give you the additional clearance needed. These pin box replacements move the pivot point of your trailer back 22 inches. It fixes the point at the hitch using a wedge and uses a turret to turn your trailer 22 inches back from your king pin. To get the correct Sidewinder for your trailer, you will need to determine your current pin box number. This is normally on a sticker located on your pin box itself. If you don't have this sticker, there is a way to measure for fit. I've attached the articles to assist. This combination will be a much better option than a sliding hitch like the Pullrite Autoslide even though it claims 22-3/4 inches travel. You also have air ride options with a sidewinder for even more comfort if desired.
Let me know if you have further questions or need clarification. I also recommend adding a 2nd 7-way trailer wiring connector to the bed of your truck using # C56070.
