Comparing Towing Vehicles for Covered Utility Trailer Daily Use
Question:
I am a carpenter. I am looking at putting all my eguioment in a Wells Cargo multi use trailer. The mpt581 that is 86inch long interior and 64inch high overall. Im estimating my tools will weigh maybe 1200 pounds and I may haul some material but not a lot. Im considering buying either a 2018 Honda Pilot, a 2018Toyota Highlander or a 2017 VW Touareg. The pilot comes with a dealer installed hitch. The Touraeg with a factory hitch and the highlander either way. Question: Do you have an opinion on which one of these suvs can do the job pulling this trailer every day around the city?

You will want to check the towing capacity of each motor and transmission combination in the vehicles you are referencing. For instance, the 2018 Highlander can tow 5,000 lbs in most cases but there is a model that can only tow 1500 lbs.
For the 2018 Honda Pilot, only the AWD version can pull 5,000 lbs.
The 2017 VW Touareg has a towing capacity of 7,716 lbs. With your trailer you won't need to have over the 5,000 lb capacity so any of the vehicles will work fine for your trailer as long as you get the model rated for towing. You can see all the specs online for your particular trim package to confirm, but I always recommend getting what you want to drive. Any of these options will work well for you if you as long as you have about a 3,000 lb towing capacity so you are well within your limits.
If you get a factory hitch, I recommend getting a 2 inch receiver versus a 1-1/4 inch, so take that into consideration as well. The 2 inch is just a sturdier hitch and will give you more options for ball mounts and other accessories.
