Can a Roadmaster Dual Hitch Receiver be Used to Tow a Trailer or Dolly or Used with a Winch
Question:
The description says for flat towing only, not for trailer. I assume flat towing is pulling a car with the car having all four wheels on the ground using a tow bar. But how is that any different than towing a trailer or towing a car on a tow dolly? Perhaps it is difference in tongue weight, but it has a tongue weight rating of 400 lb which sounds adequate for towing a trailer of perhaps 4000 lbs. So it seems it should be adequate for towing a trailer up to a given weight. Perhaps I am not understanding something. The next question is how about using this to mount a winch? Assuming limit of 10000 lb line pull. Thanks.

You are correct about flat towing; towing a vehicle with all wheels on the ground behind another vehicle, usually an RV. There is very little tongue weight when flat towing a vehicle since it is for the most part supporting itself. There is significantly more tongue weight when using a trailer since the tow vehicle hitch has to support some of the weight. The Roadmaster dual hitch receiver # RM-077-4 is not tested or rated for use with a trailer. Tow dollies on the other hand do have more tongue weight than when flat towing but not as much as a trailer and the adapter can be used with a tow dolly. You just need to make sure you stay under the tongue weight with the dolly and whatever accessory you're carrying.
The top receiver is meant for accessories such as a bike rack or cargo carrier and is not approved for use with a winch since a winch can potentially far exceed the capacity of the adapter. Based on your questions it sounds like you want to be able to pull a vehicle up onto a dolly or trailer but have the winch mounted on the tow vehicle rather than the dolly or trailer. The ideal way to do this though is to have the winch mounted on the dolly or trailer with its own dedicated battery.
A winch such as # BDW15017 was made to be mounted on a trailer (of course it is not limited to being on a trailer). The mounting bolt pattern for this winch is 4-13/16" x 3". I have linked a video review of this winch for you.
If you already have a winch then it is possible that it too could be mounted on a trailer or dolly directly. But I do not recommend the use of a hitch mounted adapter used with a hitch mount winch plate because the stress could damage the adapter.
