Installing an Electric Trailer Brake Controller on a 2008 Chevy Silverado 1500

Question:

Is my 2008 chevy silverado 1500 pre-wired from the factory for brake controller installation? I think it is?...If so, will this make it a simple install that I can do on my own? Thanks

Your 2008 Chevy Silverado will have the wiring for a brake controller located under the dash, below the steering column and to the left of the brake pedal. The wires are held together by a white tag that may also list the functions of the wires. If not, you can follow the color/function code below.

Brake Controller White to Truck White (ground)
Brake Controller Red to Truck Light Blue (stop light)
Brake Controller Blue to Truck Dark Blue (electric brake output)
Brake Controller Black to Truck Red (12 volt power)

If there is an orange wire, do not connect it to anything.

After connecting and mounting the brake controller according to the instructions, linked for reference, there may be some connections that you will need to make under the hood to make the tow package active. I have included a link to an FAQ article that will explain the process. You will want to look at the section called Finalizing Connections for the Brake Controller.

If the truck came with a factory installed 7-Way trailer connector, then after making the connections under the hood, installation is complete. If the truck needs a 7-Way, you will need part # PK11916. I have included a link to a video showing a typical installation.
