Expert Reply:

In your case, you will have to follow the tongue weight rating of your 2017 Ford F-250. The tongue weight rating on the Curt Trailer Hitch receiver, # C15802, is the weight that this particular hitch will fail and does not represent the total towing capacity of your truck.

The max tongue weight that you will be allowed to tow will be the max of 1500 that is rated for your vehicle. Even if the hitch has a tongue weight rated up to 2500 lbs your vehicle cannot handle that much tongue weight.

The towing capacity can vary within a model as well depending on drivetrain package or trim level. Tow capacity of the vehicle takes into account engine size and output, transmission strength and gearing, frame structure and suspension to name a few. Just remember to follow the capacities of the lowest rated component.
