Electronic Sway Control For 2016 Ram 1500 Towing Aluminum Motorcycle Trailer
Question:
I have a 2016 RAM 1500 Standard Cab Short Bed, i.e. short wheelbase that I tow a ProLine MOT 80-14 cross country with various weights from empty to up to near its 6000 pound GVW limit. Its curb weight is 1800 pounds. Are there more effective sway control available than a friction device, short of a larger truck? From looking at some of the products, I think I have a couple problems. The all aluminum trailer has a low 18 inch optimum ball height. The top of the trucks hitch receiver opening sits at 23 inches, even allowing for an inch sag, thats 22 inches which is a 4 inch , I think. The trailer will also sag a bit bellow18 inches when loaded. I have air bags on the truck so I can adjust for sag if needed. I’d be worried that a standard weight distribution hitch would drag over things like speed bumps. Some reviewers mention this. I don’t want to go to a larger truck.

Adding a weight distribution system will put the bottom of the system about 5 or 6 inches below the ball mount on your 2016 Ram 1500. I know that is what you are trying to avoid but ground clearance will be limited regardless of what system you use. You will need to check with the trailer manufacturer to see if a weight distribution system can be used with your trailer.
There may be another solution for you though. Take a look at the Curt Electronic Sway Control System # C94VV. This system is designed to be mounted to the tongue and applies braking force to counteract the sway.
If you decide to go with a weight distribution system with sway control, I recommend a system like the Equal-I-zer # EQ37120ET. This is designed for tongue weight between 800 and 1200 lbs. This system has a 4-point sway control built in that stops sway before it begins. The maximum trailer frame height that this system works with is 6 inches and the lift brackets are mounted between 27 and 32 inches from the center of the coupler, so you will want to make sure this system can work for you.
