Recommended Trailer Tongue Size for use with Channel Tongue Trailer Coupler # CT-3001-Z

Question:

Hey Ive got a light duty trailer thats been jack knifed and needs a new tongue. What type of steel do I buy to mount this coupler on? The current one is just some kind of light weight, stamped metal-ish product. I see that c channel steel comes in 2inch width with 1inch legs. Is that enough leg demension to attach this coupler to? Do I need to buy square tube? Yes, it is a straight tongue trailer.

Helpful Expert Reply:

Channel Tongue Trailer Coupler # CT-3001-Z requires a 2 inch wide tongue but I recommend a boxed tongue and not C-channel so there is more support where it counts. Steel tubing at least 1/8 of an inch of wall thickness will do the trick. The length can be pretty much whatever you want but the longer the tongue the lower the tongue weight capacity will be.
