Recommendation For Hub Upgrade For Mobile Home Axle
Question:
I am trying to upgrade from the hub style that comes on mobile homes to a more common size. I found this part that the bearings and seals are the correct size but it's stating the drum diameter is 12 15/16 inch and I'm measuring 12 inch inside diameter of the brake hub. Is this a typo or do I have the wrong part looked up?

Mobile home axles, hubs, and parts are designed for more of a one time use. Most of the time, replacement parts and options are not available. However, since you found the bearing numbers (Inner Bearing Item # 25580 and Outer Bearing Item # 15245) then Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly, Item # AKHD-655-6-EZ-K, might work.
Before going forward with this option, there a few things to consider regarding right fit of Item # AKHD-655-6-EZ-K. First, This assembly is specially designed for E-Z lube axles which may or may not be what you have (more than likely not the same). You might be better off with Trailer Hub and Assembly, Item # AKHD-655-6-K, that fits most standard axles without the E-Z function. Second, check your bolt pattern and make sure you have a 6 on 5-1/2 pattern (article on measuring bolt patterns attached). Third, mobile home spindles and axles often are not "standard" sizes which could cause other challenges.
If the bearings match up and the the bolt pattern is the same then I believe either hub and drum assembly, Item # AKHD-655-6-EZ-K or Item # AKHD-655-6-K, will meet your needs. These hubs are for 12 inch brakes and should work for your situation.
Another option to consider and which I strongly recommend, is to replace the axle on the trailer. If you do this, you will have a durable axle that also will have replacement parts that are easier to find. You will need to consult a qualified trailer shop to have this done correctly. We carry the parts that would be needed so let me know and I can make a recommendation for you.
