Parts Needed to Install an Electric Brake Controller on a 2017 BMW X5

Question:

Hello, I am looking to purchase a 2017 BMW X5 and I would like a wiring harness recommendation that will work with a Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Electronic Brake Controller I already own this one if possible. If not compatible, please recommend another wiring harness brake controller configuration that will work with the 2017 X5. Thank You

I can help you find what you need to get it installed but there isn't a direct plug-in wiring adapter for the Prodigy P2 # 90885 that's confirmed to fit your 2017 BMW X5.

You can install a 4-way trailer connector on the back of your X5. Use # 119250KIT for this. It needs to be hardwired into the BMW's wiring. Then use our # ETBC7 kit to convert the 4-way to a 7-way. This kit also includes everything you need to install the P2.

However, finding the wiring under the dash for the P2 is extremely difficult on a BMW SUV like yours. Many people stay away from it. Instead of using the P2 another option is to install the same 4-way connector and then add a 7-way, # 37185. You won't connect the brake circuit wire. You will need enough wire to go from the 7-way to the positive post of your battery.

Then for a brake controller use the Curt Echo # C51180. This installs in the 7-way connector and uses its 12-volt circuit for power. Then it communicates wirelessly with your smartphone.

If you don't already have a trailer hitch on the BMW I suggest the Draw-Tite # 75600. It's a 2 inch, Class III hitch that installs with no welding or drilling.
