ST235/80-16 Trailer Tire and Wheel Recommendation for a Toy Hauler Trailer

Question:

I typically run HD truck tires on my trailers and this trailer is due for new tires. To go to an HD truck tire though I need a 16inch wheel and now looking at this site it looks like a good package deal.. What is the life expectancy of the tire listed on your site being the Kenda radial? The trailer tires are usually 3 years with a 55 MPH cap... And they are more susceptible to blowouts than truck tires. Years of personal experience here.. I have not had any experience with these radial trailer tires though and if they still have the same stats as a bias trailer tire Ill stick with the truck tire. So there is a lot going on here. First you should know that trailer tires are constructed differently than passenger vehicle tires. Trailer tires, with ST in front of the size, are built with a thicker sidewall to handle more vertical load whereas passenger vehicle tires are built for more lateral forces (because they have turning axles). This is why passenger vehicle tires should not be used on trailers.

The main reason trailer tires see more blowouts is because people under inflate the tires. Trailer tires should be inflated to the maximum psi indicated on the tire. If under inflated trailer tires generate excessive heat due to the thicker sidewall and that is what causes blowouts.

It is hard to pin down a specific life span for a trailer tire because it depends on how often the tires are used and, if not used frequently, how the trailer is stored or tires covered (or not covered).

Most trailer tires are now rated for 65 miles per hour but there are some that are rated higher. For example Taskmaster tire # TTWTRTM2358016E is rated for 81 miles per hour.

Radial tires are excellent for road travel. They track better and run cooler than bias ply tires. Bias ply tires work fine on pavement but excel more for off-road type applications (gravel/dirt).
