There are 2 types of wiring harnesses available for your 2012 Buick Regal and # 36538. First there is the kind that just plugs in, gets grounded, and you're done. The other kind plugs in and grounds as well but also has a powered module that requires a direct connection to the vehicle battery.
The benefit of the second, powered type is that the vehicle battery provides the power for the trailer lights rather than the trailer lights getting power through the tail light wiring. This helps to protect the vehicle wiring and reduce the chance of overloading the vehicle side system. It also offers more protection from shorts on the trailer side.
If you want to plug in and go then you can use # HM11141375.
