Trailer anti-sway equipment comes in two basic types, the separate friction-style units like # 17200 from Curt and the superior integrated type included in a weight distribution system. These integrated systems offer several advantages: they do not require you to get out of the truck to disengage the friction unit every time you need to back up the trailer; and they deliver far better anti-sway performance by preventing sway from starting up in the first place, instead of trying to stop it once it has started.

The key to selecting one of these weight distribution/sway control (WD/SC) systems is knowing the loaded trailer's actual tongue weight (TW), with all your supplies and gear in place, and to this adding the weight of any cargo in the truck that sits behind the rear axle, such as a loaded cooler or generator. This cargo weight acts just like trailer TW so it needs to be accounted for. With this total TW known you can choose a WD/SC system that will keep your tow vehicle level even when under load and prevent trailer sway from passing trucks and wind gusts.

We offer scale # e99044 for measuring TW but other methods are outlined in the linked article. Since all WD/SC systems work over a range of TW, the goal is to select one so that your total TW figure falls in the middle of its range.

The linked page displays all WD/SC systems for 2-inch hitches that include the shank. Click on your TW figure to see suitable options. For instance, for a total TW of 500-600-lbs a great option is the Reese Strait-Line # RP66083 which works over a TW range of 400 - 800-lbs. All you need to add is a hitch ball like # A-90 (2-inch) or # 19286 (2-5/16-inch).
