What is Trailer Tongue Weight & How Can it be Measured

Expert Reply:
Curt hitch # 13199 is indeed a correct fit for your 2004 Nissan Titan. This Class III hitch has a 2-inch receiver opening and is rated for 6000-lbs trailer weight and 600-lbs of trailer tongue weight (TW).
TW is the downward force on the hitch ball from the trailer's weight. Usually a properly-loaded trailer's TW will be between 12 and 15-percent of its total gross weight. Trailer hitches, and the vehicles they are bolted to, both have TW ratings and you'll want to ensure your trailer's TW load exceeds neither the hitch's nor the truck's ratings.
We offer a scale # e99044 to enable easy measurement of trailer TW. Properly loaded trailers handle better and have fewer issues with sway. You can refer to the two linked articles for more on trailer TW and towing.
