Matching Weight Distribution Hitch To Tongue Weight

Question:

Hi - I have a 600-1200lb TW rated Weight Distribution Hitch. I have a 2012 Nissan Pathfinder which will be towing Approximately 4500lbs with about 550lbs of Tongue Weight. What is wrong with me using the WDH I described above with my Pathfinder-Trailer setup? Doesn't a WDH effectively virtually extend the frame of the trailer to the Tow Vehicle? Wouldn't stronger be better or at least make no difference? I also have the ability to adjust the chains on the WDH so that there is less spring force.

It is always recommended to use a weight distribution system that is properly rated for your trailer tongue weight. Using a WD system that is rated way above the tongue weight on your trailer can make for a rougher ride and could lead to trailer bounce and unwanted shifting of your trailer cargo. For this reason, you want to match your tongue weight to a WD system such that your tongue weight falls close to the middle of the WD system's tongue weight range.

Since your 550 lbs tongue weight is only 50 lbs under the recommended tongue weight rating for you WD hitch, you might be able to use it without issue - the 600 lbs rating isn't an exact cutoff. You will have to try it out and see.

If your current WD system proves to be too much for your tongue weight, I recommend the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution System # FA94-00-0600. This WD system is rated for tongue weight of 400 lbs - 600 lbs. Check out the video linked below for more details.
