Parts Needed To Convert Electric Drum Brakes To Disc Brakes On Triple Axle Trailer

Question:

Hello, I have a Kaufman triple axle car hauling trailer with 7000lb lippert axles. It has electric drum brakes on it now and I pull it with 2015 Ram 3500. I was wondering if you sell a kit to convert it to disc brakes or if I have to piece it together. My truck has the integrated brake controller to handle this and I have the break away already on trailer. I will need a good actuator thinking about the Dexter 1600 psi. Also was wanting to know which coating I would need. This trailer is pulled in all weather and several miles a year. Just looking for some ideas on what would be the best route to go. Thanks

We do offer all the parts you need to convers your trailer to electric over hydraulic disc brakes but they do not come in one kit. I have attached a helpful article that explains what is needed to put disc brakes on your triple axle trailer.

There are a few things you need to know when changing your system over. First, you need to know what the mounting bolt pattern is on your brake flange. You will then need to find the brake kit that matches the flange pattern and also fits your trailer spindle. The best way to make sure you select the right brake assembly is to know what size bearings you have on your current setup. You can pull a hub and look for the numbers on the bearings. If you can't find them you will need to measure the spindle where the bearings and seal ride to find the right brake kit. I have attached a drawing that shows where you need to measure your spindle. You will want to use a digital caliper like part # PTW80157.

The best brake kit you can use is stainless steel like part # K2R79S. For a less expensive system I would recommend a brake assembly with the Dacromet coating like part # K2HR758DAC as it provides excellent corrosion resistance as well.

Next you will need to select a brake line kit for your trailer. I have attached a link to the tripe-axle brake line kits we offer. You can use the filter on the page to select the length trailer you have for the kit that will work for you.

The Dexter Brake Actuator, part # K71-651 will work well with the disc brakes for your trailer.

If you want to let me know what bearings you have and what your brake flange bolt pattern is and how long your trailer is I will be glad to make some recommendations that will work for you.
