Adding a Functioning 7-Way Trailer Connector to a 1999 Ford F-350 with or without Factory Connector

Question:

How can I tell if my 1999 F350 SD came with the factory 4 way or 7 way connector? I am trying to buy a replacement 7 way connector as the previous owner mutilated mine, but some replacements say they will only work if the truck came with the factory 4 or 7 way plug. My truck has a 7 way and 6 way plug at the back but the 7 way plug only had 4 wires run to it.

It sounds like your 1999 Ford F-350 either came with a factory 4-Way or no trailer connector at all. A dealership might be able to tell you what equipment the truck had based on the VIN so that is one thing you can try.

Even if it came with a factory 4-Way you can still install a 7-Way with relative ease. First, follow those 4 wires you mentioned forward under the truck. If they plug into another square/rectangular connector then you can use 7-Way # 118243 which comes with the fuses and relays to make it fully functional.

If those 4-Wires go to lights or anything other than a connector then it is likely the truck did not come with any type of factory connector. Since you already have a 7-Way with the light functions you would just need to hardwire the remaining functions using an installation kit # 5506. I have included some links that will help with this installation. Not all of the parts of those links will be relevant so just follow the parts that are.
