Ball Mount Options for Towing Trailer with 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan
Question:
Dear: I own a WV Tiguan and want to get a trailer to pull 2 motorcycles weight of the 2 bikes around 950 lbs total. I want to buy a used trailer locally and I havent purchased it yet. I have installed a 2inch hitch receiver on my car and want to buy your trailer wiring kit 118675 with a tester. I realize i will also need a ball mount and a ball. my question is: do I need to buy the ball mount after I purchase the trailer to make sure the or rise will work? How different are the trailers in height? I see you sell a kit with 2 risers and 2 balls: part # 989900 . Is that what I need or should I consider an adjustable like part # MT70380 or #MT70067 or MT70068. Finally what size ball should I buy to make sure it will most likely work wit ha motorcycle trailer? Thank you for your expert advice.

Ideally you buy the hitch first, measure the difference in height between the hitch and the bottom lip of the trailer when level and then buy a ball mount that matches the rise/drop so that it can be towed as level as possible. For your 2016 Tiguan I would recommend the hitch part # e98906. Which when we installed this hitch we found that it measured 15-3/4 inches from the top of the opening down to the ground.
Without knowing what trailer you plan to buy the part # 989900 would be a great option to allow you to tow most trailers within reason. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch ball, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag.
An adjustable ball mount like the # C45900 or # MT70068 would be a great option too that would basically ensure that you be able to tow the trailer level immediately.
