Adapting 6-Way Square Wiring for a 2000 Viking Pop-Up to 4-Way Wiring on a Chevrolet Colorado

Question:

I have a 2006 Chevy Colorado with a 4 wire flat connection and I need to find an adapter for a 2000 model Viking pop-up that has is a 6 wire rectangle. Is there such an adapter or do I need to buy the other 4 wire flat to fit my truck and cut the end off and splice the 6 wire into a 4 wire? I do not need brakes or 12V charging while hooked up to my truck.

Since you do not need the trailer brake or 12 volt charging functions when towing your pop-up, you would be able to cut off the 6-Way square connector currently on your Viking Pop-up and use a 4-Pole Trailer End Connector, item # 18004, to connect to the 4-Way connector on your 2006 Colorado.

I would recommend that you use 7-Way RV connectors, to upgrade your vehicle and trailer wiring for ease of use and to have more universal connectors for towing other trailers.

The most universal connector is the 7-Way RV connector. Our Adapter 4 Pole to 7 Pole and 4 Pole, item # 37185, will allow you to use both the 7-way and 4-Way connector at the rear of your Colorado and adapters are available for many other trailer connectors should your needs change in the future, see link.

If you do not want to wire the extra 3 functions on your Colorado you can tie them up out of the way for future use, with a zip tie.

On the trailer side you would need to change the rectangle connector out to a 7-Way Trailer Side Connector, item # PK12706. You will need to determine the correct wires on the trailer to connect to the terminals inside the connector. This would then plug into the connector on your vehicle. If you decided to go ahead and hook up the trailer brakes for safety when towing, you would also need a brake controller like the Tekonsha Prodigy P2, item # 90885.

We have detailed instructions for the above mentioned installations, see links. The brake controller installation page will help, if you do not need the extra wiring just follow the instructions to get your stop/turn and tail lights working. We have a video installation which includes the 37185 connector on a 1979 F-250 for you to check out also.
