Weight Distribution System Recommendation for 2016 Toyota Highlander towing More than 5,000 lbs
Question:
Toyota list the maximum towing capacity of 5000 for this vehicle, but then also says in their manual that if towing more than 5000 lbs to use a weight distributing hitch, which confuses me. We are considering this Lance trailer but its GVW is rated at 5500 lbs. By adding a weight distribution hitch, can you exceed the towing capacity rating of a vehicle without damaging it?

Due to the design of weight distribution systems they allow the vehicle to be able to tow higher weights. It is very common for vehicles/hitches to have higher towing capacities when used with a WD system.
Your trailer would most likely have a tongue weight of between 500 and 750 lbs so for a WD system you would want the # RP66083 which has a tongue weight range of 400 to 800 lbs and features the only sway control designed to fight sway before it starts.
For a 2 inch ball you would want part # A-90 and for a 2-5/16 inch ball # 19286.
