Recommended Winch To Pull A 2000 lb Pontoon Boat Up A 45 Degree Incline Transitioning To 30 Degrees
Question:
We have a 20 foot pontoon boat that we need to pull out of the lake for the winter months. The boat landing is at the bottom of a hill with about a 45 degree incline . The landing area s to about 30 degree where the we need to pull the boat about 30 feet to be winterized. We can not get a 4X4 truck with a winch down there to pull the boat out. I can not run an electrical line down to the landing. What kind of winch do I need? How many pounds of pulling power do you believe is necessary, considering the boat weights 2000 pounds, up a 30 degree incline about 30 feet? There are oak trees in the landing area. Can I attach a winch to a tree? I sincerely appreciate any help you can give me. Thank you!

For this application, I reached out to my contact at Bulldog Winch and we came up with what we believe is what you will need based on the information you gave me. There are many factors involved here, so we are trying to cover all the bases for you and make it easy. I will give you our recommendation for using the oak tree to mount the winch, and using the 4x4 truck to power it.
I recommend the Bulldog Winch Standard Series Off-Road Winch - Wire Rope - Roller Fairlead - 8,000 lbs, # BDW10041. To power this winch, I recommend connecting it to your 4x4 truck because this will draw a couple hundred amps, for this we will need # BDW20197. We will also need a mounting bracket to secure to, and for this I recommend the # BDW20291. You will need to drill some holes in the base plate for 3/4 inch shackle screws to fit. These shackles are # B4292100. You will attach this to the Bulldog Winch Tree Saver Strap - 3" x 10' - 30,000 lbs, # BDW20015, which will be wrapped around the oak tree to those shackles.
To double your strength when pulling, I recommend the Bulldog Pulley Block # BDW20005 and Safety Chain Quick Link # C82932. You would connect the pulley block to your boat and run the wire from the winch around the pulley and secure it back to the shackle at the mount. This should account for any issues with a straight pull and the 100 foot cable that comes with your winch should be sufficient to utilize this.
