Raising Trailer Suspension to Increase Ground Clearance
Question:
Last month I ordered the whole rolling 5th wheel hitch for my short bed pickup. Got it all mounted and today went and picked up the 5th wheel 1984 Terry Taurus 18 foot I had bought. I need to raise the camper about 4 to 5 inches to make it level when hitched to my 5th wheel hitch. I read that one could put the axles on top of the springs to gain more height so rear of camper is not so close to ground. Do I need any special parts to do this change and do you have literature on best manner to do this change?

Yes, if your leaf springs are currently mounted to the bottom of your axles, moving the springs to the top of your axle will lift the trailer's suspension. Switching the spring location will raise your trailer suspension by the width of your axle plus the thickness of your springs. Depending on these measurements you could see a 4 to 5 inch rise in the trailer suspension.
I recommend Dexter's Trailer Springs Over-Under Conversion Kit # K71-384-00 for 2-3/8 inch diameter axles or # K71-385-00 for the 3 inch axles. The kit replaces old U-bolt and mounting hardware and provides a seat for the spring to rest on the top of the axles.
I also recommend inspecting your springs and all components for any wear or damage before changing your trailer's leaf spring location. If they are broke or appear to be worn out, I recommend replacing the old springs. We carry both double-eye and slipper leaf springs and all the hardware needed to install on your 5th wheel trailer. Again, you will need measurements to identify which set of leaf springs and hardware you will need for your trailer's axles.
I have linked a help article the will show what measurements you will need for leaf springs and other information of trailer suspension.
