Recommended Yakima Roof Rack for 2016 Toyota Avalon

Question:

I have a 2016 Toyota Avalon and a lot of Yakima roof equipment, cross bars, bike racks etc. Can they be used on my car? What towers will I need? how many Bikes can I carry? How much noise would this set-up make? Would I be better off with a trailer mounted system? I have used a trunk mounted rack and found it to damage the finish on my last Avalon.

It all depends on what Yakima equipment you already have to determine whether the components will work on our 2016 Toyota Avalon. You clearly want to use as much that you already have and not have to purchase anymore than you need.

There are a number of Yakima roof rack systems compatible with your 2016 Toyota Avalon. The towers that are specific to your car are the Yakima Baseline Towers # Y28TR and the BaseClips # Y06130 and Y06131. They will fit your car, it's just a matter of whether or not they'll work with the crossbars you already have.

If you need crossbars as well, for the BaseLine there are a several that fit: the 48 inch RoundBar # Y00408, which will need an adapter # Y03536, the CoreBar Crossbars # Y00421, and the Jetstream # Y00425.

When determining how many bikes you can carry, you will want to check your Avalon's owner's manual, or with Toyota, to find out how much weight can be mounted to the roof. Keep in mind the weight of the roof rack will need to be considered into this as well.

All roof racks will create wind noise. The round bars are the most basic and will create the most wind noise. The CoreBars are more aerodynamic and will be quieter, however the Jetstream bars are designed to be the quietest with a built-in WindRidge to reduce noise.

A trunk mount rack can cause damage to your vehicle. Especially if you're using it a lot or for long trips. If you would rather go with a trailer hitch mounted bike rack, to avoid the contact with your car, and need a hitch the Draw-Tite Class II # 36540. This is the best option because the Curt hitch, that is also available, will require you to use a stability strap to carry anything that isn't a trailer, like a bike rack. There's an install video of the hitch on a 2016 Camry which is a similar process to your Avalon, the Camry requires a panel to either be removed or trimmed that won't be necessary for you.

A great Yakima hitch mount bike rack is the Yakima RidgeBack 4-Bike # Y02458 because of the anti-rattle installation from the SpeedKnob.

I've attached several videos for you to go through to help you decide what you need.
