To install a fifth wheel hitch on your 2010 GMC Sierra 1500 with a 6-1/2 foot bed, you will need to use a fifth wheel hitch with a slider. The slider is used to eliminate clearance problems between the truck cab and the fifth wheel trailer on slow speed turns.
The Reese 16K Fifth Wheel Hitch, # RP30047 you have referenced is a fixed hitch and will not give you the clearance you will need to tow a fifth wheel with a 6-1/2 foot bed.
I would recommend the Reese 16K Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch with Round Tube Slider, # RP30075. This hitch uses the non-binding, round tube slider which will give you an extra 12 inches of front to back travel.
The base rails for a Reese Fifth Wheel Hitch will be installed with either a universal installation kit, # RP30035, or a custom installation kit, # RP50064-58.
I would highly recommend the custom installation kit. The installation time is half as long as the universal installation kit. It also uses vehicle-specific brackets that mount to existing holes in your vehicles frame which help minimize the amount of measuring and drilling needed.
To install the Reese 16 K Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch, # RP30075, on your 2010 GMC Sierra 1500 6-1/2 foot bed using the Reese Universal Base Rails and Installation Kit, # RP30035, the measurement to install the base rails is 25-1/8 inches from the rear edge of truck bed with the tail gate removed to the rear edge of the base rail closest to the rear edge of the truck.
To install the base rails if you have the custom installation kit, # RP50064-58, the measurement is 47-1/2 inches from the rear edge of the truck bed with the tail gate removed to the rear edge of the base rail closest to the cab of the truck.
When installing the base rails, you will want to install the first base rail using the measurements in the instructions for your 2010 GMC Sierra 1500 6.5 foot bed. Then, with the first base rail installed to the truck bed, you will put the fifth wheel hitch in the first base rail on the truck bed. Then, you will put the second base rail on the fifth wheel hitch and sit in the truck bed to mark where to attach the second base rail. This will give you the correct location for installing the base rails.
I am sending links to the installation instructions of both the universal install kit and the custom install kit. The instructions will show where and how to measure to install the base rails on your vehicle. Also, I am sending a video link to the base rails and a custom install kit being install on a 2010 GMC Sierra.
